Why 'stranger'?

You may wonder why I use the name stranger as my nick on the 'net. There is a story to that. That might not very exciting, but I want to share it with you anyway... *S*

When I came onto the 'net in September 1997, and I just happened to stumble into a chatroom (Geocities' Nashville RoadHouse), I had to pick a handle to use there. At the time I was a fanatic square- and round-dancer, so... dancing... dance... dancer !!! Very simple... *grin* At the time I couldn't think of anything better... I got to know some people there, and one of them took me to two different chatrooms: the SoHo Loft and the Athens Parthenon (both at Geocities as well). I started frequenting those rooms, especially the Parthenon, and became a reg there...

For some stupid reason I got into an argument with someone, of whom I thought he was a CM (Chat Moderator) *grin* I found out later that he wasn't one, but I didn't know at that time... He (whose name I no longer remember) was stating some ridiculous things, and I felt offended. Thinking he was a CM, I felt like he wasn't supposed to act like that, and demanded his apologies. He refused bluntly, and I dared him to kick my ass out of the chatroom. So I said some things that would surely would get me booted. *LOL* I can tell you, it did. But... I had been talking to some friends, so I wanted to get back... slight problem! I could change my IP address (they recognize you by that), but I also had to change my name... So I started thinking... very hard to do, I admit, but I tried, nevertheless... Sitting in front of my CD-collection, I finally saw the album 'Stranger In This Town' by Richie Sambora. I though that might be just the name... so I entered the room again, named 'Stranger In This Town'. I made myself known to the people that knew me as 'dancer', and then a few things happened/occurred to me...

  • my friends liked this name way better
  • ppl I didn't know were intrigued by this handle and started conversations more spontaneously
  • before, ppl thought I was an exotic (female) dancer, which was not exactly what I had in mind with the nick 'dancer'...

So, I decided to keep the name, be it in a shortened version: 'stranger'. I changed my nick on ICQ, I opened an e-mail address: stranger-mj@writeme.com (N/A anymore), I made everyone know me as 'stranger'. Sometimes people joked about the name, and I liked that. 'Don't be a stranger' or 'stranger? stranger than what?' to just name a few simple ones...

Anyway, I have liked the name from the start, and I will keep using this handle... And when you have come this far with reading this story, you may agree... or maybe not... but the most important thing is: I do. *S* I agree, it may seem strange... but hey, I'm stranger...
